On October 24, 2024, The Poly STEM Outreach Club attended a STEM event at Rita Rossi Colwell Center, where five club members experimented with Middle School students.
The Poly STEM Outreach attended a STEM Event called STEM Unbound at Rita Rossi Colwell Center. Our club members worked with Ingenuity middle school students across Baltimore City. The activity we chose to showcase was Strawberry DNA Extraction.
In this activity, students along with our club members experimented with strawberries. The goal of the experiment was to extract DNA from a strawberry. We used frozen strawberries, dish soap, alcohol, salt, and water to conduct the experiment, and we also used lab materials like pipettes, beakers, and tubes sent and donated by Thermo Fisher. The activity was very successful, and students were able to extract DNA from a strawberry with the help of our club members.
In conclusion, our station was successful. A lot of students liked and enjoyed our station. We were able to provide students with hands-on experience and put smiles on their faces. Thank you to Thermo Fisher, Goley Lab, and Poly Cares Initiative for helping make our strawberry DNA activity happen. MISSION SUCCESS!
