On May 30th, 2024, we went to Mount Washington Elementary/Middle School. This was our last school of the year 2023-2024. We collaborated with the Robotics Club and AFJROTC from Poly and invited them to come to Mount Washington with us to present and showcase our activities to 3rd grade students.
First, four of our club members visited two 3rd grade rooms to give a short presentation about the importance of STEM. At the end of the presentation, there's a short trivia, we give out candies to students who got the questions in the trivia correct. After the presentation and trivia, students then moved to the gym to do the fun hands-on activity we prepared for them. We split them into groups and put them in different stations. The Poly STEM Outreach Club brought Conductivity, Shape Fill, Baking Soda and Vinegar, and Spaghetti Tower as activities for the students.
In the baking soda and vinegar activity, the students experimented with baking soda and vinegar. We used a water bottle, baking soda, vinegar, and a balloon to conduct the experiment. The purpose of this activity is to give them hands-on experience and teach them about the science behind this experiment.
In the conductivity experiment activity, we let the kids examine what types of objects can light a light bulb. We used alligator clips, batteries, small LED lights, and wires to conduct this experiment. We also brought objects like a fork, paper a clip, a dime, and a gum wrapper. The purpose of this activity is to teach kids about conductivity and its mechanics.
In the spaghetti tower activity, we challenged the kids to make the tallest structure or building using a long spaghetti pasta (uncooked) and marshmallows. The purpose of this activity is to give them a bit of knowledge about engineering, and to teach them how to think like an engineer.
Lastly, for the shape fill activity, the students were tasked to fill out a piece of paper that has a certain shape, and use the colorful paper blocks to fill the shape in. The purpose of this activity is to teach kids about units in Math.
The Robotics Club brought their robots, and made the students play with them. Meanwhile, AFJROTC brought a bow and arrow; they demonstrated how archery works and how to use the bow and arrow.
Then at the end of the event, we gave out our STEM activity book to all the students.
In conclusion, we have yet another successful event, the students and club members had fun and the 3rd graders were very energetic. MISSION SUCCESS!
