On January 29th 2025, the Poly STEM Outreach held a STEAM Night with Arlington Elementary School and Poly Robotics Club. We worked with different elementary students from Arlington.
The Poly STEM Outreach club brought four activities: Mathopoly, Egyptian Tech, Oobleck, and Strawberry DNA. There were 14 club members including 3 members of robotics,
In the Strawberry DNA station, three of our club members experimented with the students, they were guiding the students step by step. The goal of the experiment was to extract DNA from a strawberry. The activity was successful, and students were able to extract DNA from a strawberry with the help of our club members. The purpose of this activity was to give students a hands-on experience, and give them a short overview on what it's like to work in a lab.
In the Mathopoly activity, students were separated into groups of two, then each group is given the chance to roll the dice and move their groups figure; if a student lands on a lot that they wanna buy or a question mark, the student is given a card with a math problem to solve. To win the game, the group or student has to have the most money out of all the players. The game was designed to match the curriculum of the students. The purpose of this game was to teach students about math while also letting them have fun. Overall, the game was pretty successful, the parents and students loved the game.
In the Egyptian Tech activity, two of our club members demonstrated a pulley. They taught the science behind the activity while also letting students use it. It was a fun and interesting activity, a lot of kids liked it. The purpose of this game was to teach students the mechanics and science behind a pulley.
In the Oobleck station, three of our club members experimented with corn starch and water, and created an oobleck with the students. Although, it was the messiest station, the students still loved it and enjoyed it a lot.
Lastly, in between rotations, we gave out raffle prizes and STEM Activity Books.
In conclusion, the event was successful, and there were a lot of students that came. They enjoyed the event according to the survey we gathered and the club members had so much fun. MISSION SUCCESS!
